No doubt it has happened to most of us that you have been saving that one bottle of wine for the perfect occasion, and when the time comes, you try to open it and the cork disintegrates. A real and common problem with old bottles of wine is a crumbling cork.
Sometimes it is the top half of the cork that will disintegrate. Other times it is the bottom part that crumbles into the wine, and sometimes it’s the center that turns to powder as the corkscrew pushes through, leaving the outer parts of the cork stubbornly stuck to the glass.
